This page explains how our compliance guides, state resources, comparisons, and customer stories are sourced, when they are reviewed, and how we correct them when something changes or we get something wrong.
Primary sources first
Regulatory claims — form requirements, fees, retention periods, notice windows, statutes — are grounded in primary sources: ATF publications and rulings at atf.gov, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Gun Control Act and related statutes, and official state agency pages for state-specific requirements. Secondary commentary can point us to a topic, but it is not the basis for a stated requirement.
- Numbers and deadlines are stated exactly when the source is exact, and hedged explicitly (for example, “generally about 60 days — verify with your field office”) when practice varies or guidance is not uniform.
- State guides carry the official agency links and a review date so you can check the source yourself.
- Where the law is unsettled — pending litigation, vacated rules, appeal windows — we say so rather than presenting one outcome as settled.

High-stakes pages — state requirements, form-revision guides, inspection content — are the first in line for re-review when the underlying rules move.
