You may use what you read here to make licensing and inspection decisions. That means the details need to be accurate, current, and clear about their limits. These are the standards we use to source and review our compliance guides, state resources, comparisons, and customer stories. They also explain how we fix something when it changes or we get it wrong.
Primary sources first
We ground regulatory claims — form requirements, fees, retention periods, notice windows, and statutes — in primary sources. Those sources include ATF publications and rulings at atf.gov, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Gun Control Act and related statutes, and official state agency pages for state-specific requirements. Secondary commentary may point us to a topic, but it isn't the basis for a stated requirement.
- Numbers and deadlines are stated exactly when the source is exact, and hedged explicitly (for example, “generally about 60 days — verify with your field office”) when practice varies or guidance is not uniform.
- State guides carry the official agency links and a review date so you can check the source yourself.
- Where the law is unsettled — pending litigation, vacated rules, appeal windows — we say so rather than presenting one outcome as settled.

When the ATF revises a form, a statute changes, or a court ruling changes the rules, we update and re-date the affected pages. State requirements, form-revision guides, and inspection content are first in line for another review.
